Firmer Bigger and heavier with Speedfol™

“During the 2006-2007 season, tests were performed at the area of Collipulli, Chile, on a full production blueberry block of Elliot variety, planted in 1992 and fertirrigated. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of Speedfol™ strategies on blueberry firmness, fruit diameter and fruit size” reports Ignacio Sepúlveda, WSF and Speedfol™ Sales Manager at SQMC.

As from the full blossom stage, the treatments were based on successive applications of Speedfol™ Ca SC (as calcium source) along with Speedfol™ Biolife, an essential growth regulator for fruit development. As from fruit set, Speedfol™ K SL and Speedfol™ Marine SL were applied to encourage further growth.

10 harvests were performed to record the above mentioned quality variables. The treatments turned out to be highly effective as an increase in firmness, fruit diameter and fruit weight was noted.

Fruit firmness increased by 10%
Fruit firmness increased by 10% as a result of applying Speedfol™ Ca SC
which improves the structure of fruit cell walls and enhances postharvest life.

Fruit diameter increased by 6% during the whole season
Fruit diameter increased by 6% during the whole season and the natural trend of blueberry to reduce fruit diameter
by the end of the season (see control) was broken. This enables producers to pack uniform
fruits during the entire harvest season, which has become an imperative requirement in blueberry production.

Fruit weight at harvest noted 8% higher
Fruit weight at harvest noted 8% higher compared to the control, which represents an additional
income of US$ 7.900 per hectare for a farmer with adult blueberry orchards.
