ClFoliar Applied Speedfol™ Rice SP and Ultrasol® K Increase Rice Farmer's Net Income up to 10%.

"Under low boron, medium potassium and high zinc soil conditions, 3 foliar applications with Speedfol™ Rice SP or 3 with Ultrasol® K on Indica rice, increased crop yield by respectively 8% and 11%, whereas the farmer's net income raised by respectively 5% and 10%" reports Sissi Ji, Agronomist at SQM China.

Since China's Jiangxi Province is the second largest production area for Indica rice with 3,2 million ha under this crop, SQM decided to set up a trial in an Indica rice field in Nanchang to assess the added values of foliar applications with Speedfol™ Rice SP and Ultrasol® K. The trial area consisted of a paddy field, i.e. a flooded parcel of arable land used for growing rice and other semiaquatic crops, with 91 mg exchangeable K per kg (medium level), 5,3 mg available Zn per kg (high level) and 0,18 mg available B per kg soil (low level). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized block design with 27 plots in total: 3 soil K levels, 3 foliar treatments and 3 replicates.

Most of the rice produced in Southern Asia is Indica (see picture). The grains are long and tend to break easily. When cooked, the rice is fluffy and does not stick together. The grains of Japonica rice are round and do not easily crack or break. When cooked, this rice is sticky and moist.

Main results

  • Foliar applied Speedfol™ Rice SP or Ultrasol® K, on top of the current standard practice of applying 150 kg KCl/ha in the base dressing, increased crop yield by respectively 8% and 11%, whereas the farmer's net income raised by respectively 5% and 10%.
  • Lower soil K input levels of 75% and 50% resulted in respectively 3,2% and 5,5% less crop yield and respectively 3% and 5% less net farmer's income calculated as an average of the 3 soil K input levels per foliar treatment.
  • 3% to 7% higher crop yields and 3% to 5% extra net income can be obtained with respectively only 50% or 75% of the recommended KCl dose rate in combination with 3 foliar applications of Speedfol™ Rice SP or Ultrasol® K, compared to the current standard of 100% KCl and no foliar applications.
  • Foliar application had a positive effect on the percentage of grains filled, as well as on 1.000-grain weight. Compared to the untreated control plot, the percentage of filled grains increased by 1,9%-3,7%, whereas the 1.000-grain weight increased by 1,8%-3,1%. It should also be noted that there was little difference between F1 and F2 under the same KCl base dressing conditions.
